摘要

Residual stress in a material is as effective as externally applied stress in causing stress corrosion cracking. In order to measure residual stresses, X-ray diffraction and strain gauge rosette capabilities were developed. The X-ray diffraction measurements were made by another company. Strain gauge measure¬ments were made at Bendix Kansas City.nThe X-ray diffraction measurements showed all compressive stress¬es. This would lead to the conclusion that residual stresses alone would not produce stress corrosion cracking. The strain gauge rosette measurements showed the heat affected zone (HAZ) to have a maximum residual tensile stress of 276 MPa.
