Since its inception in 1977, the Space Conditioning Technology Program has promoted energy conservation in residential and commercial buildings through the development and commercialization of improved space conditioning equipment. After study of the technical issues involved in the use of advanced technology and surveys of available technology in gas-fired and oil-fired equipment, the Program supported development of promising concepts for oil-fired equipment including: low/variable firing rate burners, high-efficiency non-condensing equipment, and condensing equipment and materials. Use of coal-oil mixtures in oil-fired heating equipment serving large buildings was also investigated. For gas-fired equipment, projects included a low input variable firing rate gas burner, high efficiency condensing equipment, a pulse combustion furnace, and a pulse combustion boiler. The Program also included field tests of selected developmental equipment. In addition to the evaluation, development, and testing of promising energy saving concepts, the Program was concerned with dissemination of information related to advanced heating equipment technology and encouragement of manufacturers to commercialize new more efficient systems.
