Advanced Characterization of Combustion and Conversion Feedstocks

In this paper we discuss characterization of feedstock coals for steam generation and liquefaction. The discussions are divided into three areas: (1) general background information, (2) state-of-the-art coal characterization, and (3) projected needs for improved characterization and highlights of germane DOE research. An analysis scheme is suggested for predicting the slagging and fouling characteristics of a coal. Characterization of coal for liquefaction is directed toward relating physical, chemical, petrographic, and mineralogic properties to potential performance in a hydrogenation test in order to develop a useful predictive methodology.
