Efforts are currently being pursued to develop new energy storage technologies for application on electric utility power systems. This study assessed the potential role of two energy storage technologies in municipal and rural electric utility systems. It involved detailed case studies of the economics of the application of compressed air energy storage (CAES) and advanced battery storage on three actual systems, two rural electric cooperatives and one municipality.nIn the case studies, power supply expansion plans including CAES and advanced battery storage were compared to a base expansion plan supplied by each participant. The economics of these power supply expansion plans were compared using a long-range capacity expansion plan simulation model.
