摘要

The document discusses the Elder Tutor Intergenerational Latchkey Project, a program comprised of the elderly, middle-age parents, and elementary school children. The elderly had a primary role in intergenerational caregiving activities. The program also addressed the needs of latchkey children and the improvement of educational skills through the provision of additional instruction in basic science, math, and other subjects. The key to the project was the retired volunteer who had the desire, time, knowledge, and skill to contribute meaningfully to his community and to society in general. The project began with 6 volunteers and 14 students, and the community response was overwhelmingly positive. After about 5 months, the program, centered at San Diego State University's Center on Aging, joined La Mesa-Spring Valley School District in its latchkey program. The integration of the elder tutors with the existing program was viewed as an enrichment to the program, and enrollment swelled to 300 children and 50 tutors.
