This redport evaluates the stiffness for a standard tape-joint structural connection. This stiffness is frequently necessary when modeling a structure (e.g., a shock model). In general, for a standard cylindrical tape joint, the stiffness is 1.2 times greater in compression and 0.67 smaller in tension than the mating shell material. The stiffness of a special-purpose planar and development cylindrical tape joint is also evaluated. Joint stiffness must usually be determined experimentally because standard connections are difficult and/or time consuming to analyze in depth. However, the simple design of the tape permitted a detailed finite-element analysis. The finite-element results on a developmental joint deviated less than 2% from the experimental values in compression and less than 25% in tension. 13 figs. (ERA citation 11:032427)
