Contemporary Civil-Military Relations: Is the Republic in Danger

Within the last year, Richard Kohn, former chief of the Office of Air ForceHistory, catalyzed an increasingly heated debate concerning the alleged politicization of the American military. In an article, Kohn identifies warning signs indicative of the increasing alienation of the US military from its civilian leadership. He lists a series of actions demonstrating that the U.S. military is now more alienated from its civilian leadership than at any time in American history, and more vocal about it. Perhaps more seriously, Kohn suggests that the armed forces are becoming dominated by supporters of a single political party.
