Challenges Facing Mongolia's Participation in Coalition Military Operations

The military policy of Mongolia states that 'Mongolia shall have a compact, capable, and professionally oriented armed forces tailored to the peace-time needs and the economic potential of its country.' The participation of Mongolian soldiers in international peacekeeping efforts is a way to increase the strength and combat readiness of the armed forces in peacetime. It is a way to develop the professional capability of military personnel while transforming the armed forces. The government of Mongolia strongly supports U.S. policy and actions in the Global War on Terrorism. Mongolia became one of the first countries in the Asia Pacific region to offer to dispatch military personnel in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Today, members of the Armed Forces of Mongolia are participating in both Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. While Mongolia has faced a number of challenges in both operations, it will continue to support the war against terrorism.
