The results of the program of evaluation of prescription sunglasses for naval aviators indicate a need for and a readiness to accept these glasses for service use. From these results, a proposed design for such glasses which combines the preferred features of several types of glasses which were evaluated is recommended. For the naval aviator who requires corrective lenses while performing his flight duties, the prescription sunglasses will be most welcome in terms of assuring adequate vision and maximum comfort and sun and/or glare protection.n1. On the basis of the results of the questionnaire and informal discussions with some of the participants in this program of evaluation, a requirement and recommended design for sunglasses, both prescription and piano, are established.n2. The sun and/or glare protection of the size lens used in the Navy experimental sunglasses is preferable to the smaller lens which is being specified by MIL-G-25948(USAF). The more angular cut-away of the portion of the experimental lens in the nose-cheek immediate area is comfortable for a larger number of persons, including those who have high cheek bones and/or fleshy cheeks.nOn the basis of the results obtained from the completed questionnaires which were issued with experimental prescription sunglasses and on the basis of additional information obtained during informal discussions with some of the participants in this program of evaluation, it is recommended that prescription sunglasses be issued to those aviators who require corrective lenses for the adequate and efficient performance of their flight duties. It is recommended that these sunglasses be of the same shape and dimensions as the Navy experimental sunglasses procured under Naval Air Material Center contract N156-34494 with the American Optical Company, as shown in figure 1. These glasses should be heat treated according to standard practice;the color of the glasses should be N15, neutral gray, standard nomenclature in the optical trade. It is strongly recommended that the completed sunglasses be fitted by the flight surgeon who prescribes the glasses in order to assure proper fit.nIt is recommended that piano sunglasses of this same style be made available for all flight personnel not requiring corrective lenses.
