Social Value and Technology Design

In a series of meetings among engineers held at UCLA to examine engineering design, most of the time and effort were devoted, perhaps surprisingly, to considering the place of value in design. The question kept arising whether it is the concern of engineering to introduce values, including ethical considerations, into the design process.. Suppose that an engineer decided to incorporate a safety feature into his design of a piece of machinery because he wants to protect the user.nThe place of value in a world of fact has come almost guiltily to center stage with the invention of The Bomb. It is highlighted further by such consequences of automation as unemployment.
