A Digital Computer System for Signal Analysis

Equipment and procedures have been developed for signal processing and the analysis of experimental data in conjunction with a digital computer (Computer Control DDP-24). Digital magnetic tape recordings of time-sampled data obtained at remote field stations during experiments on underwater sound serve as a primary source of data for analysis. The basic computational operations are correlation and spectral analyses. The system described provides for input to the computer memory from unblocked digital tape, selection of data by means of visual display, and output from computer memory of data or results, as desired. Details of hardware and software for special applications are discussed with particular emphasis on features which enhance the interaction between machine computation speeds and human interpretive power.
