Experimental Investigation of the Infrared Absorption by Atmospheric Gases

The report summarizes work devoted to the emission of hot H2O and CO2 and to the absorption by these same gas species and other atmospheric constituents. The emission work involved a furnace and gas-handling system which could heat samples to approximately 2000K with the sample at nearly-uniform temperature and pressure. Many of the data have been presented in great detail in scientific reports in the form of tables of transmittance and integrated absorptance versus wavenumber. Strength of many absorption bands have been determined, and widths of the lines have been investigated. More than 25 weak bands of CO2 which had not been reported previously have been observed and identified. New information on the shapes of the extreme wings of CO2 and H2O absorption lines has been obtained. The shapes have unpredicted dependence on the broadening gas and temperature. (Author)
