Experimental Investigations of Convective Movements in the Boundary Layer of the Atmosphere

A method for investigating mesoscale convection in the boundary layer of the atmosphere is described which involves the use of an instrumented aircraft and glider to determine simultaneously the ascending air current and provide information on the horizontal and vertical extensions of a current, its structure, the temperature and humidity within and outside the current, and other characteristics. A group of non-instrumented gliders circling in the air marks the ascending currents and aids in determining the center of the current and the boundaries of its extension. The velocity of ascending currents is measured by a glider by determining the vertical velocity of the glider relative to the earth by means of a variometer and the vertical velocity of descent of the glider relative to the air in an undisturbed atmosphere.
