Physiological and Pharmacological Effects Following Oral Administration of Monopropellants, August 1978-September 1979

Physiological and pharmacological testing of LGP-1845 and LGP-1776 was conducted in anesthetized beagle dogs. Toxicity of the two orally administered monopropellants appears to be due to te formation of methemoglobin in the blood. The high nitrate composition of these compounds apparently results in the in vivo conversion to nitrites and subsequent methemoglobin poisoning. Standard treatment utilizing methylene blue and supportive therapy are indicated in the event of accidental poisoning with this material. (Author)
