This document reviews the effects of noise on people, including (1) the effects of noise level, duration, and frequency on hearing and (2) the effects of noise on the cardiovascular system, work performance, speech intelligibility, and sleep. It is one of several documents prepared under this task that deal with various aspects of noise as related to habitability and the safety of personnel aboard merchant ships. (Author)
