Propagation of Sound in a Fast Bottom Underlying a Wedge-Shaped Medium

The pressure and phase distribution of sound in a fast fluid medium underlying a tapered fluid medium was modeled using a Green's function approach. The model predicted well-defined beams in the bottom, with apparent interference effects strongly evident for cases at a distance from the wedge interface. The effects of attenuation on the patterns were studied. A simple expression for determining the beam depression angle as a function of the wedge angle, the sound speed ratio, and the density ratio was derived. Comparisons with laboratory measurements were made.
