In the course of attempts to grow a single crystal of the PPN(+) salt of the heptahydrodiborate anion, (Ph3P)2N(+)B2H7(-), for X-ray and neutron diffraction analysis, prolonged exposure of B2H7(-) to the mother liquor CH2Cl2/(C2H5)2O yielded colorless crystals containing a new anion, (Ph3P)2N(+)BH3Cl(-)CH2Cl2. An improved synthetic procedure for BH3Cl(-) was subsequently developed, and spectroscopic and structural analyses of (Ph3P)2N(+)BH3Cl(-)CH2Cl2 were completed. The compound crystallizes in space group P1. The structure was refined to yield agreement factors.
