Determination of Exposure Levels in a Simulated Delousing Procedure (1 Percent Lindane Dust)

One percent lindane dust has been used as a pedinculicide for military personnel for over 30 years. It is also the only such approved item currently maintained in inventory for the control of infestations to troops in the field. Delousing of military troops is not done routinely. Dusting is done only when deemed necessary to control a possible disease outbreak, and is most likely to occur in temperate or cold weather areas. Delousing kills only active lice, the eggs remaining unaffected until hatched. This procedure may therefore be repeated after a two week interval to kill latent hatchings. Troops are instructed not to bathe for 24 hours after application of dust.
