摘要

Considering the extensive use of MIL-L-23699 synthetic lubricants in both commercial and military jet propulsion systems, a potential hazard may exist for personnel exposed to the combustion products following aircraft engine fires. The objectives of this investigation were to evaluate the acute dermal hazard of the combustion products from MIL-L-23699 lubricating oil and to determine if washing of the exposed site will prevent convulsions and death. Acute dermal toxicity of pyrolyzed MIL-L-23699 lubricant samples was determined in male and female B6C3F1 mice. The lethal dose for 50% of the population (LD50) of male B6C3F1 mice was estimated to approximately 50 mg/kg and for female mice approximately 100 mg/kg. The lethal effects of toxicity can be prevented if the exposure site is thoroughly washed and dried within 5 min after exposure. Tap water (deionized) or sea water worked just as well as a detergent wash in preventing the lethal aspects of the pyrolysate exposure to the skin. When comparing the solvent effects of the oil pyrolysate to dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as a vehicle for the penetration of the neurotoxicant formed in the pyrolysate, DMSO was a better vehicle, enhancing penetration of the neurotoxicant at least 20-fold.
