Strong Three-Dimensional Interactions of Several Arbitrarily Located Penny-Shaped Cracks

The general three dimensional problem of elastic interactions of N arbitrarily located and oriented penny shaped cracks is considered. The analysis is based on the method of analysis of many cracks problems proposed recently by Kachanov that yields simple solutions for the stress intensity factors (SIFs) around the cracks edges, accurate up to quite close spacings between cracks. Several representative geometries are analysed to illustrate some typical features of 3D interactions, and to demonstrate the power of the method. Reprints.
