Environmental Symptoms Questionnaire (ESQ): Development and Application

The Environmental Symptoms Questionnaire (ESQ) was developed to help researchersquantify symptoms experienced by individuals exposed to extreme conditions. The ESQ has evolved into a general symptom questionnaire from earlier designs for capturing the symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Item have been added, removed and revised, and scale changes were made for greater reliability and ease of administration and completion. Factor analysis revealed significant symptom clusters and weights for scoring the ESQ. Discussion is given to these developments and to the application to a number of environmental studies.
