Stability of monodisperse dry foams

We show numerically that the model structures for dry monodisperse foams proposed by Kelvin in 1887 and Weaire and Phelan in 1994 are both unstable to changes in the relative volume of the cells. Such a change could occur if the cells were filled with gas which could diffuse through the cell membranes. We speculate that, unlike in two dimensions, there are no foam structures in three dimensions which are stable against diffusion.
