New York City Council moves to reduce city's purchase of products containing PVCs and PBDEs

The New York City Council passed two bills - Int.544 and 534 - Dec.21 designed to reduce the city's purchase of polyvinyl chloride(PVC)plastic products and products containing the flame retardant poly brominated diphenyl ether(PBDE)as well as other toxic chemicals.Int.544,which has 36 primary sponsors and was introduced Jan.19,amends the city's administrative code by adding a new chapter designed to reduce the purchase of products containing hazardous substances.The amendment stipulates that the city Administrator must develop a plan to reuse or recycle electronic devices used by the city by 2008,and that no new devices purchased or leased by the city until then can contain PBDEs in an amount exceeding the proscribed safe limit for human exposure in European Union directives enacted in 2002.
