Integrated production and ISO 14000 standards in horticulture: one and the same struggle?

The article reports on the response of producers to the new requirement under EU directives to act in an environmentally friendly fashion and seeks a way forward in terms of the ISO 14000 standards. Many firms have been attracted by ways of combining production and environmental awareness as a response to public concerns and policy changes, especially in horticulture, which involves intensive methods of working that are challenging to the environment. Following the introduction, successive sectionsare devoted to the concept of integrated production, environmental management, and the ISO 14000 standards series and the idea of environmental audits. The conclusion stresses that all actors must be involved, from managers to workers and foremen. A table gives an overview of the situation and developments in particular regions of France, while a side panel deals with the example of Salade Minute, the only firm in France to have been awarded standard 14001 so far.
