Hexadecylbenzene was prepared by the alkylation of benzene with 1-hexadecene in ionic liquids prepared by in-situ method. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were used as the evaluation method for alkylation technology. The influences of the type and acidity strength of catalysts, molar ratio of benzene to alkenes, reaction temperature and time, recycling use of catalysts on conversion for alkenes, selectivity for mono-alkylbenzene, and distribution of isomers were investigated. Under the optimum reaction condition, 100 percent of conversion and selectivity were both obtained, and the selectivity for m-isomers (with benzene rings located at the middle positions along the alkyl chains) achieved 50.63 percent. The acidity strength had significant influence on the distribution of isomers.
