Some 70% of the UK's coal has never been mined. This is, perhaps, a dramatic or surprising statement, but puts in perspective the abundance of coal which was either uneconomic to extract or access by the once vast coal industry. Where the UK's coal mines provided the fuel for the industrial revolution and even up until the 1990s produced coal to generate the lion's share of electricity, the vast amount of 'stranded' coal remains difficult to comprehend.
