Compared with November 2009, the November 2010 indicators from Statistics South Africa for the mining and manufacturing sectors in South Africa show positive growth above the expected percentages, clearly indicating a slow but sure upturn in activity in these sectors. In addition, the current favourable gold price is expected to hold firmly while the demand for many other minerals is steadily growing. This is bound to permeate through to the manufacturing sector where there are already signs of increased activity as expansion projects in mining are beginning to take off again. A company already feeling the up-tick is Polysius, a division of ThyssenKrupp Engineering (Pty) Ltd, which has landed major orders for large shell supported mills. These include three mills with combined 50MW installed power for a mine in the United States and two separate greenfield mining developments in southern Africa.
