What lessons can be learnt from the US shale gas experience and how can they be applied to Europe? Alboran has long argued that the void between the demise of nuclear power and renewable energy must be taken up by gas.1 Domestic shale gas, if fast tracked by governments, could make a significant addition to imported pipeline gas and LNG. However, other than hypothetical estimates of potential European shale gas deposits, no significant or commercial quantities of shale gas have actually been discovered or produced. For shale gas to be successfully exploited, European governments must seek to fast track exploration and production, whilst avoiding any unintended consequences.
