'Dieselgate' saga

In September and November 2015 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board served two Notices of Violation on German car manufacturer Volkswagen, charging that during 2009-2015 the VW 2.0L and 3.0L model diesel cars had been equipped with illegal defeat devices. The devices had software in the electronic control modules that sensed when the vehicle was being tested and switched between two emission controls systems - one on testing that reduced NO_x emissions, and one for the open road that optimised engine performance, increasing NO_x.
