Isolation of Clostridium perfringens from the duodenum of broilers with enteritis from selected farms in Southern Luzon, Philippines

This study reports the isolation of Clostridium perfringens from the duodenum of 20 of 150 (13.33 percent) broilers with enteritis and none from 45 apparently healthy broilers in selected farms in Southern Luzon. Duodenal swab samples from necropsiedbirds were collected and inoculated onto blood agar plate for anaerobic isolation. C. perfringens isolates were identified based on conventional biochemical tests. Chickens from Rizal province had the highest percent recovery (7.33 percent) of the organism, followed by Laguna (4.67 percent), and Batangas (1.33 percent). This study confirmed the presence of Clostridium perfringens in broiler chickens examined.
