The nascent natural gas-to-liquids (GTL) business took a great leap forward and an equally giant step back last week as Royal Dutch Shell and state Qatar Petroleum (QP) celebrated the laying of the ceremonial cornerstone for their 140,000 barrel per day Pearl GTL complex.Only two days earlier Exxon Mobil and QP decided the economics no longer supported their planned 154,000 b/d Palm GTL plant and shelved the venture-at least for now.
