Canada: A sticky situation for Shell in the tar sands

AS IF LOW oil prices and uncertainties over costs were not enough to cause palpitations in the hearts of the companies developing the oil sands, environmental groups are ratcheting up the pressure.Shell's Athabasca developments in Alberta have been targeted by the Oil Sands Environmental Coalition (OSEC) - a grouping including the Pembina Institute, the Toxics Watch Society of Alberta and the Fort McMurray Environmental Association. OSEC claims Shell has broken an agreement on the extent to which it would cut greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from two of its projects and that approval for these projects should be reconsidered as a result.
