A huge natural gas discovery offshore Egypt raises questions over the country’s need for imports from would-be suppliers Israel and Cyprus. Italian firm Eni’s Zohr gas find could hold around 30 trillion ft~3 (850bn m~3) - the largest gas discovery in the Mediterranean and equivalent to almost half of Egypt’s proven reserves of 65 trillion ft~3, according to BP. Eni holds a 35pc share in Zohr and the rest is stateowned. The firm will drill further appraisal wells by early next year and aims to fast-track development by utilising existing infrastructure.
