Iraq’s al-Abadi faces up to crisis

Iraq’s new prime minister designate Haidar al-Abadi has the support of the Shiite political forces,Iran and the US,but he faces huge political challenges to end the civil war threatening to break up the country. Al-Abadi has asked Iraq’s political blocs,including those representing Kurds and Sunnis in parliament,to begin consultations to form a new cabinet by 10 September.Al-Abadi will replace his Dawa party colleague and caretaker prime minister Nouri al-Maliki,who had tried to cling to the post.Politicians within and outside the Shiite alliance will try to extract appointments to key ministerial posts and other concessions from him in exchange for their support.
