Argentina’s new government, led by Mauricio Macri, has resumed talks with bondholders that have refused to restructure debt stemming from the country’s historic $100bn default in 2001. Buenos Aires needs to resolve litigation in the US with a small group of creditors that hold the defaulted debt, before it can return to international capital markets after a 15-year absence. The dispute in 2014 pushed Argentina into technical default on part of its debt under the previous administration of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who was hostile towards a negotiated settlement.
