Italian and Dutch authorities have questioned Shell over its role in the controversial acquisition of oil and gas block 245 offshore Nigeria. The block has been embroiled in legal battles, allegations of corruption and money laundering, as well as high-level political infighting since former Nigerian military leader Sani Abacha awarded it to Nigerian firm Malabu Oil and Gas in 1998. Shell and Italy’s Eni took joint ownership of the undeveloped block in 2011 after years of legal battles, presidential interventions and a controversial payment of $1.3bn to the Nigerian government as a “facilitator”.
