Muscat pins its hopes on unconventional gas

Oman's focus is rapidly shifting to exploration of uncon- ventional gas resources, with conventional gas reserves unable to meet projected gas demand. "We are going after shale gas, unconventional gas, tight gas. We have built so many wells and we will be drilling more wells, to prove that shale gas, unconventional gas is available, and we will go after it, even if it is expensive," oil ministry undersecretary Nasser bin Khamis al-Jashmi says. Muscat expects advances in technology to bring down exploration costs and make producing unconventional gas commercially viable.
