Tanzania emerging as LNG exporter

The UK’s BG has discovered an estimated recoverable gas resource of almost 13 trillion ft3 (368bn m~3) based on seven discoveries at three blocks offshore Tanzania and plans to build an LNG project in the country. The LNG project is likely to be developed with Norwe- gian state-controlled energy firm Statoil, which has made similar recoverable gas finds in block 2 next to BG’s hold- ings. Africa’s east coast holds huge amounts of untapped gas reserves, with exploration programmes currently evalu- ating Tanzania and Mozambique’s offshore resources. BG’s key discoveries are the Jodari and Mzia fields in block 1 that hold 4.1 trillion ft3 and 4.5 trillion ft3 of recover- able gas resources, respectively. The Chewa-Pweza-Ngisi hub is estimated to hold another 4.1 trillion ft3 of recoverable gas resources. Drilling results from the Ngisi 1 exploration well, in block 4, are expected in June. BG operates blocks 1, 3 and 4 with a 60pc share, and London-listed Ophir Energy holds the rest. Statoil is block 2 operator with a 65pc share, while ExxonMobil owns the rest. The block holds an esti- mated 10 trillion-13 trillion ft3 of recoverable gas.
