A revolution in healthcare: Challenges and opportunities for personalized medicine

When it comes to the implementation and application of personalized medicine, the past decade indicated diversity and different understanding regarding the current status, opportunities for the future, and finally, the way in which the transition to this new paradigm of medicine will be accomplished. It is clear that the great promises made right after the first sequencing of the human genome in 2001 have not come to reality as quickly as it was expected. New challenges evolved starting from the first insights into the human genome, leading to the understanding that genome information alone would not provide the full understanding of the functioning of the human as a whole. It became obvious that we are dealing with a much higher complexity far beyond the understanding of the genome as the 'blueprint' for the human body.
