Majors target return to Burma’s upstream

Oil majors are aiming to return to Myanmar (Burma), as leading global energy firms bid in the country’s first major offshore licensing round after years of sanctions. ExxonMobil, Total, Chevron and Shell are among the 30 firms that submitted bids for 19 deepwater and 11 shallow-water oil and gas blocks that were offered in April. The par-ticipation of majors and other leading European energy firms is a boost to Myanmar’s potential, given doubts about the lack of upstream data and regulatory uncertainty that had threatened to hold back interest (WPA, 1 March, p7).
