The Need for and Creation of a Comprehensive Pediatric Research Network

Pharmaceutical clinical trials involving children have often been considered an afterthought, at best, because of the minimal relative market for pharmaceutical companies in pursuit of the next blockbuster drug. As a result, many medications prescribed for children have not been formally tested for safety and efficacy in the pediatric population and thus lack pediatric drug labeling. Previous studies reviewing medications listed in the Physician's Desk Reference have found that 75-80% of the medications listed lack pediatric labeling.
