Grasshoppers frustrate many Texas pecan producers

The hot, dry, dog days of summer are upon us here in Texas and grasshopper and June beetle calls have been common. Over the past month I have received several calls on grasshoppers and June beetles defoliating trees and I'm sure more calls are on theway.These hot dry conditions we are experiencing favor grasshopper development and survival and, with these conditions having been prevalent for the past few years, hopper numbers have really increased. The warm dry falls that we have experienced the past several years have favored grasshopper development by allowing grasshoppers more time to feed and lay eggs later into the year plus the diseases that normally infect grasshoppers during wet periods are not active.
