OPGA meeting provides abundance of grower guidance

A large turnout assembled at the Pecan and Fruit Research Station at Perkins, Oklahoma on June 19 to kick off the Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association's 75th annual conference. Attendees enjoyed a closeup look at several research projects and heard somepractical advice resulting from those efforts. OSU research technicians Becky Cheary and Becky Carroll shared results from studies assessing the impact of weed control on young pecan tree growth. It was plainly evident in the research plots that lack ofweed control inhibited young tree growth. Trees with a very small or no weed-free zone around them were much smaller than neighboring trees with a larger weed-free circle, Cheary pointed out that the trunk diameter of the trees was not affected by the size of the weed-free circle during the first two years after planting; however, in the third through fifth years there was a significant relationship between the size of the vegetation-free circle and trunk diameter.
