Nanomix Inc. (Emeryville, CA), a developer of carbon nanotube gas sensors and nanomaterial hydrogen storage systems for fuel cells, has lined up 9 million dollars in Series B financing. Apax Partners and Sevin Rosen Funds led the round, which also included EnerTech Capital Partners and Series A investors Alta Partners and several individual shareholders. The University of California, Berkeley, spinoff is headed by two well-known nanotech pioneers, Marvin L. Cohen and Alex Zettl. The business originally focused on computer modeling of nanomaterial behavior prior to synthesis. The latest round of funding, however, follows demonstrations of two key technologies. The first involves large-scale integration of gas-sensitive nanotube electronics on a 4 in. silicon wafer. Nanomix says the sensors will offer compelling cost- and performance advantages in industrial gas leak detection, medical monitoring, and industrial process control. It expects to bring them to market by the second half of 2003.
