The Finnish Peatland Society's Excursion in Lapland from a German Perspective

After a night's train travel in a sleeping car to Rovaniemi at the polar circle, it was not difficult to find the other field trip participants at the station-just watch out for green "wilderness" clothes! Our first stop was at a pothole site, i.e. huge and smaller holes in the countryside created by melting glaciers, a surprising phenomenon. Many took pictures so did I, but perhaps not of what people expected me to take. I was nearly more fascinated by the beauty of the mosses growing on the rocks... At a big hydro power station in Petajaskoski, a huge Kaplan turbine (which was no longer in use) impressed all of us. When we then were allowed to enter the machine rooms and hear the water running around today's turbines we could imagine the power behind it. A long bridge-Eke device captured my attention. My question formulated in Finnish was understood and I got. to know that it was not part of the hydro power station but, in the past, had helped to divert floating wood onto the other side of the plant.
