It may have been built with a little help from the kids, but there's nothing childish about Sall Motorsport's rear-driven Escort Cosworth. The threshold of runway 06 at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome is thick with rubber, huge long black streaks of the stuff, some squirming from side to side as they head away up the two-mile stretch of concrete which shimmers away into a horizon thick with heat haze. They've been laid down by many years of hard launches, in all shapes and sizes of epic cars and bikes, and they're evidence of this particular runway's status as one of our country's most famous places to go very, very fast indeed. Today, two more rubber marks have been added to the collection. They're not shy either; easily fifty feet in length and straight as a die. They come courtesy of the red Escort Cosworth which sits in front of us, cooling down after its manic sprint up the runway. Its owner, Kuljiv Sail, or just Sail to anyone and everyone who knows him well, is looking a little deflated. "I can't get the power through the clutch," he explains. "If I go gently, it just slips -and if I drop it, it does that," he says, gesturing towards those thick black rubber tracks.
