It might be verging on classic status now, but Martin Tracey's RS500 shows that the Sierra Cosworth combo is still good enough to Win Championships today. When the legendary motorsport RS500S were written out of the rule books at the dawn of the 1990s, it signaled more than just the end of GrpA touring car racing. By limiting engines to a naturally aspirated 2.0-litres, the King of the Cosworths and arguably one of the greatest Ford race cars of all time was left crippled and unwanted on the side-lines. Had it been allowed to continue racing there's little doubt that it would have rampaged to countless more victories, and you never know we may have been treated to even more exciting evolutions of it as a result! In all seriousness though, it does beg the question of how long the venerable RS500 could have remained competitive. The raw power on tap from its turbocharged 2.0-litre Cosworth YB was undoubtedly one of the main reasons for its success, but if there's one thing that a modem touring car proves it's that you don't necessarily need huge power to be fast on track - a finely honed chassis, with the latest suspension and braking technology can be just as effective.
