Toad racer: Fredrik Halvorsen's road-legal Zakspeed replica might have been eight years in the making, but it's been worth the wait
When Ford first decided that getting involved in motorsport might help with car sales, it's probably fair to say that they had no idea just how well it would go. There is no other vehicle manufacturer that has its roots so deeply planted in pretty much every form of motorsport. Whilst Ford themselves may not have tried their hand at all of them, we'd not be wrong to say that there are very few forms of motor racing that a Ford of some sort hasn't dominated -be it in the hands of the constructor, a racing team, or a privateer. Whether it's on the rally stage, on the tarmac, on the short oval or even in the back of an F1 car. At some stage, the Blue Oval will have not only led the way, it will have been THE car to have. The 70s, 80s and early 90s were without doubt the pinnacle of this dominance, as after that manufacturers started turning their backs on motorsport and instead looking not at who can build the fastest car, but instead who can build the most efficient and environmentally friendly one.
