Passenger Terminal World speaks to Dubai International's development director to find out how the airport plans to cope with growing passenger numbers despite running out of space for infrastructure expansion When Dubai International was officially inaugurated on September 30, 1960, it comprised a 1,800m airstrip of compacted sand, an apron, a fire station and a small terminal building. Today the airport sits on a 12.5km~2 site, which is home to three terminals, four concourses and two runways. Passenger numbers have grown rapidly since the airport was opened and in 2015 Dubai became the third-busiest airport in the world, catering to just over 78 million passengers.
