Reducing energy consumption by using variable speed drives - examples from Romiley Board and Holcombe Mill

The average mill can save at least 10% of its total electricity consumption by using variable speed pump drives. At Romiley Board, the vsp on the new 5 tonne stock chest has reduced energy consumption while enabling a significant increase in capacity-through just a small increase in motor speed. A survey of the mill's remaining pumps has identified energy savings of 30% and a 1-2 year payback period. The new vsp at holcombe Mill has improved efficiency and reduced energy required across a whole range of flows. The average power consumed by the motor has been reduced from 75 kw to 45 kw.
